In my experience, and just like their colleagues in the NHS, fire, ambulance and police services, Mountain Rescue are overwhelmingly humble, deeply appreciative of human life and unbelievably committed to providing such a necessary and important service. The sceptic in me wonders if many people actually know or appreciate what working under extreme pressure really feels like (it’s an often used phrase these days), these people do and often many times in one day. The pressure I’ve seen has brought laughter and tears, disagreement, collaboration and exhaustion but the strength of the team lies in its commitment to shared values, high work ethic, love of the wild places, desire to learn and to be the very best but most of all to help others. Unfortunately not every rescue or search has a happy ending and the team experience more than their fair share of high pressure and tragic moments, and yet they continually give their all time and time again. It’s been an honour and a privilege over the past 3 years to contribute to the successful running of an amazing organisation, completely staffed by volunteers who give up their time and risk life and limb to bring people down safely off the mountains. Today marks the end of my role as a Trustee for Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue CIO.
